Real Grief – Real Healing, with Mindy Corporon #21 | There is Life After Triage

Triage is the degree of urgency for any and all necessary care to keep us functioning, perhaps only breathing.

When a traumatic experience drops us to our knees and we are living in the center of pain, our souls and potentially our bodies need sufficient time in triage before moving on with life.  In podcast episode 04 “You Have the Most Important Job Today” my mother elaborates on the length of time she has taken to move back into life.

Loss is universal. Our journey through grief is individual.

Are you sitting in triage right now? Have you moved on from this space yet still feel bewildered as to how you will go on each day?  In episode 021 “There is Life After Triage” I share specifics about my own time in triage and that of my family.

Recently, Dr. Joshua Pawskiewicz, Executive Director at Greater Kansas City Interfaith Council shared this quote with me and other guests during “Leaning on our Faith for Inspiration and Hope”, hosted by the Faith Always Wins Foundation, “Sit down, quiet down and pay attention”.  While his Buddhist perspective is valuable in everyday life I found the words ringing in my ears when I was recalling the first two years of my life after my father and oldest son were murdered in a hate crime.

The chaos of trauma and that of being in a situation needing triage aka “the center of pain”, does not allow for us to be “quiet” or “pay attention”. Therefore, I ask you to consider how much time you have spent in your personal triage and when will you be ready for transition to...eating healthy, taking care of yourself, exercise, smiling, engaging in conversations, enjoying your pets, enjoying anything?

If you are still in triage and need to stay there, by all means, stay put. However, if your support team, your TRIBE, is encouraging some movement so to speak, I ask you to “sit down, quiet down and pay attention”.  These three commands may be just what your soul ordered.

Special thanks this month to the principals, headmasters, counselors and staff at  Blue Valley Middle School, Blue Valley High School, Accelerated Schools of Overland Park and Montverde Academy for moving my son, Lukas, out of his triage and into his life. We could not have done this without you.

HOLIDAY ALERT! The loss of a loved one hits very hard during the holidays. In my podcast episode 017, “Holidays: You Have Permission to Establish New Rules” I offer guidance for current grievers or those of you who are supporting a griever.

Thank you for gathering with me to shine a light on peace!

Stay safe and healthy, wearing a face cover - because we are better together.
